ECO Friendly Garden Relax in the Rainbow Garden
The ECO committee has eight pupils (primary3-7) and three adults who meet every Tuesday. We are responsible for setting up ECO duties. These include emptying compost bins which are in every classroom as well as the staffroom. Energy monitors collect paper, cans and plastics for recycling. We also have monitors who look after the plants both in and outside the school, feed the birds and generally do litter watch. After discussion we set up an ECO code:
Save Energy by –
Turning off lights and computers.
Turn off taps.
Reducing waste by buying fewer items packed in paper/plastic.
Recycle and reduce whatever and wherever possible.
Being ECO friendly encourages us to look after each other and make our school as well as the world around us a safer happier place. We have been working very hard to encourage ECO friendliness throughout the school, and recently we were awarded our second Green Flag.

[...] This morning was absolutely gorgeous – cold, clear and crisp. It is what winter should be like. As I was walking into the school, though, I noted to my horror the number of cars in the car park with small, what can only be described as postcard-sized, “clear bits” scraped from the windscreen to allow the driver to see out through the frost covered glass. Some others had obviously spent some considerable time scraping the frost away. But the worst of it is, all these people live within a comfortable walking distance of the school. They must have spent longer scraping the windscreen than they would have spent actually walking to work. And yet, we spend time educating students how they should be “saving the planet”, “cutting down on waste”, “recycling this”, “recycling that”, “we should be more eco-friendly”, etc.. [...]
